1.1:
List the math classes you have taken during high school. Write a few sentences describing your feelings toward math and why - either a good experience or a bad one. Think about what type of learner you are describe the best methods teachers use to help you understand the topics. Please describe your goals after this year - do you need this class to graduate and you are a senior, are you here for MCAS reasons, or what math class or classes do you plan on taking next year?

Answer:

The math classes classes i have taken during high school are: algebra 1 cp and intergrated math. For me math is a really good subject and it makes sense. I did not like my experience in algebra 1 and it's kind of like a bad experience for me because at the end of the school year my teacher recommended me to intergrated math 1, and i did not deserve it.
I learn fast, but after everything specially in math, i have to keep reviewing at least every week in oder to remember what i learned. The best method teachers use to help me understand topics is to make the topics simple and interesting. After this year, i plan on taking trigonometry.

1.2:

Look at the following, which is an example that has been worked out step by step. Explain in full sentences each step that was taken in the problem and why that step was chosen. Be clear about the step you are looking at, for example "going from line 1 to line 2, ..." All these steps should be written in your online journal.

Answer:

- The first step is to rewrite the equation.
- The least common multiple is10.
- They distribute the least common multiple to each term.
- They subtracted 6 from both sides.
- They subtracted 40 from both sides.
- They solve for x by dividing by -1.
- They plug the 60 next to each term.
- They multiply the top and divide the bottom.
- They add the left side and substract the right side.
- Each side is equal to 34.

1.3:After spending time in class and at home solving a variety of equations, identify the type of problem that is the easiest for you to solve. Also identify the type of problem that you struggle with the most. Why is this type of problem the most challenging? Where do you make your errors most often? What tricks or reminders should you write here (in a different color) as a reminder to prevent that error in the future?

Answer:

After spending time in class and at home solving a variety of equations, the type of problem that was the easiest for me to solve is the algebraic expressions. The type of problem that i struggle with the most is the algebraic equations. This type of problem the most challenging because of the fractions. When i see fractions, i see very difficult problems. I often make my errors on the negative signs. The trick i should write as a reminder to prevent that error in the future is : a negative (-) times a negative (-) is equal to a positive +.

1.4:

List the following words and give a mathematical definition in your own words on your wikispace.
  • Linear Function
  • Relation
  • Domain
  • Range
  • Increasing
  • Decreasing
  • Slope
  • Intercept
  • Degree

Answer:

Linear Function - first degree polynomial function of one variable.

Relation - an obstraction belonging to or characteristic of two entities or parts together.

Domain - a particular environment or walk of life.

Range - an area in which something acts or operates or has power or control.

Increasing - becoming greater or larger.

Decreasing - becoming less or smaller.

Slope - the property possessed by a line or surface that departs from the horizontal.

Intercept - the point at which a line intersects a coordinate axis.

Degree - measure for arcs and angles.

1.6:Below there is a document which 4 linear graphs shown and 6 linear equations given. In a paragraph, describe how you matched each equation to its matching graph and the order in which you matched them. What graphical features did you look at or which parts of that equation did you focus on?

Answer:

After analysing the graphs, i can that number 8 matches with graph A because i can count the y intercept which is - 4 and the slope is-1 over 3. Number 4 matches with graph B because i can count the y intercept which is positive 4 and the slope is -1 over 2. Number 6 matches with graph C because i can count - 4 which is the y intercept and -1 over 2. Number 7 matches with graph D because the y intercept is positive 4 and the slope is positive 1 over 3.

1.7:Below there is a document which 4 linear graphs shown and 12 linear equations given. In a paragraph, describe how you matched each equation to its matching graph and the order in which you matched them. Each graph matches one linear function in slope-intercept form and one linear function in standard form There should be two equations per graph. Did you match equivalent functions first or did you try to match each function to a graph first? What graphical features did you look at or which parts of that equation did you focus on?

external image msword.png 1.7.doc

Answer:

Number 1 matches with B and also match with the graph with letter B. Number 2 matches with the with letter F, no graph matches with them. Number 3 matches with letter D and match with graph D. Number 4 matches with with letter C and match with graph A. Number 5 matches with letter A and also match with graph C. Finally, number 6 matches with letter E and there is no graph for them. By solving the equations in standard form first, i was able to see what equation in intercept form they match with and i figured out their graph.

1.8:Using the graph below:

  • Completethe following table
  • Write a paragraph describing the walking pattern shown. Use as much detail as possible so that some one would be able to recreate this graph from your description.

Answer the following questions:

  • When is Anne drivingthe fastest? Explain how you found your answer.
  • What time is Anne stopped? Explain how you found your answer.
  • When is Anne's speed decreasing? Explain how you arrived at your answer.
  • What is Anne's speed at 7 minutes?
  • At what approximate time is Ann driving 35 mph?

Answer:

Anne is driving the fastest during 6 and 8. I found my answer by looking at the graph and by looking at the example that they gave me in the table. For example when the time in minutes is 4.25, i look at the graph to see the speed in miles per hour and it was 0. So basicly i found my answer by analysing the graph, he table that they give me. Anne stopped in 4.25 and 5. I found my answer by looking at the numbers in the table under time in minutes, and see the speed in miles in the graph for each number in the table. Anne is decreasing in 9, 11.5, and 12. I arrive at my answer by completing the table and i see that before those three numbers, Anne was speeding 40 miles per hour which is also the highest speed in the table. At 7 minutes, Anne's speed is 40. Anne is driving 35 miles per hour during 8 and 9 minutes.
